We witness the reunion of a mother (Rosalie) and daughter (Jade) after four years apart. At the age of thirteen Jade, the only one of three siblings, was removed from the family home by her mother. When Jade turned eighteen, Rosalie built a new life elsewhere, leaving nothing behind.
Four years later a letter arrives for Jade stating that she can apply for compensation for the time she spent in the youth care system. She realizes then that to move forward, she must go back. She tracks her mother down and, armed with burning questions, shows up at her doorstep. What follows is a charged encounter that reveals the scars left by their shared past and explores what is needed to move on.
With MOMMY’S ISSUES Catoo brings to light the story of two generations of women. It is a performance that offers solace, challenges the stigma surrounding ‘problem youth’ and ‘failing’ motherhood, and illustrates the heavy toll oppressive systems can take on families.
